You got the job buddy!
No, not you. ME! I got the job. I’m pretty fired up right now. The job starts effect July 1st. There shouldn’t be a big adjustment to the new job, because I’m currently doing the job in my cross training.
Good times!
Interview Over
I just got done with the interview. I think it went very well. I had them smiling, laughing, nodding their heads and agreeing with me. After my interview my manger pulled the whole team, sans me, into the conference room to discus the candidates.
So, here I sit all alone writing this blog.
Now it’s just a waiting game.
I got an interview
I just got an outlook meeting request for an interview for the training position on Monday the 8th. I’m excited. It’ll be a 3 person panel (My lead, manger and another manger from another training department) interview. Our new admin temp set up the appointment, so I’m not sure if there are more details. I’ll have to ask my manger when she is back tomorrow. The previous interviews required the interviewees to create a presentation. That should be easy to pull off. I just need to know if I need to build one.
Wish me luck!
We missed you!

My co-worker has been in So. Cal for the last week running around Disneyland. I bet he thinks he was the only one having fun while he was gone… Wrong!
Friday after noon + his cubical + 300ft of hot pink twine = One hell of a good time! What do you think? Good times?
*** Update ***
Kent came into work and climbed through all of the twine and had a seat. I thought for sure he would cut it away first thing. He is currently un-stringing his desk with the goal of not needing scissors.
Trying to move up

I’ve been way busy at work. If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know that I’ve been in a temporary position (Cross Training) at work in the Training and Development department as a eLearning Developer. I was originally only supposed to be working in that position for 6 months, but due to a job well down and budget cuts they extended my cross training for an additional 5 months.
The last 5 months of my cross training have transitioned to a more traditional stand up trainer. Its very different for me, but I think I’m doing a good job. Going from using Flash and Photoshop every day to writing lesson plans and other documentation is a huge change. Not AS fun, but still entertaining.
This transition is great for me, because the department finally got approval to post for the open full time position in the department. The position is a hybrid position. Its a traditional stand up trainer, as well as a eLearning or Multimedia developer. Sounds right up my ally, no?
So I feel the need to work extra hard. I feel like I need to prove myself that much more. I want this new position so bad I can taste it. I’ve even started learning CSS in my free time, so that way I can list that as something I’ve learned during my cross training.
My good buddy Jim (He used to be in a Nor Cal band called Doomfinger) gave me a link to a CSS tutorial that he learned CSS from. It’s a great tutorial. I followed this instructions and build this. OK ok… It’s kinda lame, but I had to start somewhere right? I know I don’t know CSS inside and out, but I think I have a good foundation to start. I think my next step is to build a full on janderson.net site using CSS.
A quick weight loss update… I gained weight last week, but that was expected. My birthday was on the 30th and I really didn’t give a damn. I ate nearly a whole pan of yellow cake with chocolate frosting. What do you expect if you leave me alone with the best cake in the world all day?!
So there you have it. This is why I’ve been neglecting my blog. I applied for the new job on Friday. My cross training ends on June 30th, and the new job starts July 1st. If I’m luck… I wont have to switch desks.
Wish me luck.
Things that make you feel good inside

I’m not a real father, but I play one on TV in real life. I pick Molly up from her after school care 3 times a week every other week because of Patricia’s work schedule. Some nights she gets off of work after the after school care place closes. Last night was one of those night’s. Molly asked, as she does every time I pick her up, “Where’s my mama?”. I said “She’s working late today. Remember, She walked you to school this morning?”
On the drive home Molly always asks about dinner. SURPRISE! She wants to go out to eat.She always wants to go out to eat. I inform her that we already have stuff at home to cook. She then asks “Do you remember that time we went and got pizza that one time when it was just you and me, and my mom was at work?” I said “Yea?” She continued “That was the most fun I ever had with you.” What’s a guy supposed to say to that? I no longer wanted to cook dinner. I wanted to go out to dinner after hearing that, but I told her that maybe tomorrow we could go out to dinner just the two of us.
Tonight is one of the nights I pick her up. I think we’ll hit up Applebee’s. It’s her favorite, I like some things there too, and Patricia hates it. So, its a good opportunity to go. It sounds like I set the bar pretty high on the fun meter last time. I hope I can live up to expectations. Wish me luck!
Long week & fast turnarounds
TGIF! Man this has been a long week. All three of us were sick over the weekend. Molly had it the worst. She had a stomach ache that has made her tired, whiny and irritable. Patricia had to stay home for three days to watch her.
This is my first time really being around kid sickness. Dealing with a sick kid is hard. All of the not listening to you because they don’t feel well, the moaning and weird sounds… It’s enough to drive a inexperienced guy crazy. Add in some relationship drama, and overly busy work days and you have a good recipe for going cuckoo.
Recently we’ve been getting a lot of projects at work that require a quick turnaround. Projects that have nothing to do with training (I work in the training department), and all to do with PowerPoint. Projects that people said they just needed “a little help to polish things up”, but meant to say “I have some text, but you build everything else.”
On Monday we found out about our most recent request. They said they would have the text for each slide 100% worked out by end of day Tuesday, and they needed in by mid afternoon on Thursday to send it to the printers for the presentation on Monday. A day and a half to work on it? REALLY?! Tuesday we sent them four mock ups to look at and pick from. Wednesday they picked a style they liked, and I started building it using the temporary text for the slides that still hadn’t been solidified. Thursday at 10am I get the finial text, tighten things up and sent them a copy. By 3pm I received a list of edits, and 45 minutes later it was in the can and done.
I love my job, and doing the multimedia stuff is way fun, but I don’t like building PowerPoints, or extremely tight deadlines. This weekend is a weekend well earned. I can’t wait for a burger from Stanich’s!
2 hours shy of a full day of work
I’ve been teaching myself ActionScript 3 at work. It’s been a slow process, because it’s been on a as needed basis. Today I spent 6 hours trying to do something simple. Not so simple if you don’t know how to do it, but simple once you do.
I needed to play movie clips at random. The clips fade in and out as they go from one to the other, but they don’t have to be in any particular order. So I made some movie clips with shapes bouncing around, that was the easy part, and then watched a ton of tutorials on “Math.random” scripts.
6 hours later I come up with the following scripting…
var MCs = new Array(“ball”, “box”, “poly”);
var selectedMC = MCs[Math.floor(Math.random() * MCs.length)];
gotoAndPlay(selectedMC+”MC”);
WTF?! That’s it? Three little damn lines?! I’m sure to a AS3 pro this would be easy as stealing candy from a baby. Me… Not so much. So here is what 6 hours of work got me today.
Impressive, no?!
God Damn Its Cold In Here!
It was 58 degrees in the office this morning at 7am. Its now 63 at 9:30. WTF?! I’m sitting here with my jacket on. I NEVER have my jacket on indoors. I’m the kind of guy that is always (ALWAYS!) hot. So if I’m cold then just imagine how cold all the other people that are always cold are.
The corporate office downtown controls our heat. Every morning its cold, but not THIS cold. I guess they have fresh air vents that they open at night to eliminate mold and bacteria. OK, cool. They’re trying to keep me healthy, but don’t ya think they could shut them bad boys at say… 3am, and then kick on the heat? It’s hard to focus on work when my thoughts are consumed by the loud chatter of my teeth. Its like listening to my own personal jack hammer.
I’ve been sipping on sugar free suisse mocha to try and stay warm. Sounds like a great ideal, right? It sure is! Except my TherMax double insulated Thermas can’t keep it hot for more then 30 minutes.
Good gref. I need a space heater.
It smelled like someone smoking 4 packs of cigarettes at one time.
Well, when you melt the snow away and let it dry out for a few days it turns to this.
A couple of us were outside looking at a co-worker new iPhone mount that he installed into his VW Bug. Someone asked what smelled, I said “Fire” and pointing to the cigarette pot. It has been windy for a few days so I stayed outside and made sure the embers didn’t start a fire somewhere else, while someone went inside to get water.
It smelled TERRIBLE! Our clothes smelled terrible too after having the smoke blown at us. Thanks for not cleaning out your ashtray and not putting out your cigarette before walking away Butt-heads!
